Serveur permettant de dialoguer en direct avec plusieurs personnes (en s'envoyant des chaînes de caractères sur des "channels" thématiques), exactement comme on le faisait sur les forums de discussion en direct du Minitel. IRC a été normalisé par la RFC 1459, puis les RFC 2810 à 2813. Le programme IRC fut écrit en 1988 par Jarkko Oikarinen, un finlandais, en remplacement de "Talk".
