Implantation du système de chiffrement RSA mise sur l'Internet par Philip Zimmerman, ce qui a valu à ce dernier pas mal de problème, car PGP est de qualité militaire, or le gouvernement interdit l'exportation de ce genre de système. Qui plus est, RSA, qui a été développé sur des fond publics, est breveté, et la licence exclusive appartient à une société privée... Voir chiffrement, Zimmerman, Phil. Logiciel cousin mais libre: GPG. Anecdote amusante: il est interdit d'exporter des É-U un logiciel de chiffrement fort (un vrai, quoi). Par contre, il n'est pas interdit d'exporter un algorithme... Il a suffi à quelques-uns d'imprimer le code source de PGP, et de lui faire franchir la frontière, puis de numériser, OCRiser et de compiler pour que cela soit fait quand même, fonctionnellement parlant, mais pas illégalement...
